Jerzy Elżanowski

Jerzy Elżanowski is a historian of urban war damage. He holds a professional degree in Architecture from McGill University and a joint doctorate in Heritage Conservation and Architectural History from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the University of British Columbia. As an Associate Professor in Carleton University’s School of Canadian Studies and School of Architecture and Urbanism, he coordinates Canada’s only English-language graduate program in Heritage Planning, where he teaches courses in heritage conservation, urban studies, and cultural memory. His current research projects focus on the corporeal dimensions of war damage cartography and the post-conflict reconstruction of cities. He is a founding member of the Cartographies of Loss research group.
Jerzy was the inaugural Mercator Fellow in the Identity and Heritage Research Training Group. Between June and December 2018, he worked intensively with PhD students in Berlin and Weimar, both informally and as a colloquium respondent. Together with Emily Putnam, he organized the group’s study trip to Canada, including workshops, tours, and scholarly discussions in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.
During his six-month stay, Jerzy gave two lectures as part of the “Identity and Heritage” series – one in Berlin and one in Weimar (with Carmen Enss). You can listen to the lectures in our podcast section.
