National Theater.
Soviet Postwar Modernist Architecture as an Actant of the Construction of National Identities in Soviet National Republics.

The PhD project is a critical examination of post-war architecture in the former Soviet republics of Lithuania and Belarus. In the period from 1955 to 1985, numerous buildings were erected in both republics, whose history and design cannot simply be explained by the term “Soviet post-war modernism”. Rather, the modernist buildings erected in the two Soviet republics are in each case an expression of local negotiation processes that were decisive for the construction of the national identities of the republics and still contribute today to the national self-definition of the states that have been sovereign since 1991. The dissertation project comprises, on the one hand, an inventory of the artifacts, their formal and material composition, as well as the social circumstances of their creation – and, on the other hand, an investigation of the madeness of the interpretations and meanings conveyed by them.
