Unequal Spaces of Possibility for Remembering: Memory, Heritage, and Social Inequality (working title)
In the various academic debates dealing with memory and remembrance (for example, “memory studies” or “heritage studies”), there are numerous discussions on the topic of social inequality. As interesting as these existing studies are, sociological concepts are not always addressed systematically. My project therefore aims to create a theoretical framework and to bring together various strands of an inequality-sensitive theory of memory. The project is based on a theory-building process that requires an intensive interplay of existing theoretical approaches and empirical research. At the moment, I therefore anticipate two research phases. In the first phase, I will engage with existing theories. For example, I am reading less well-known texts by Maurice Halbwachs on the working class of the early 20th century, which he wrote before his books on collective memory and which are partly only available in French. I (re)read these texts as early explorations of the topics of memory and remembrance. Based on initial considerations by Gérard Namer, I will ask what it means that Halbwachs, using the example of the working class, takes up the question of whether there are social groups that are “without memory.” In a second phase, the relevant questions will also be addressed empirically and linked to more current theoretical considerations on the topic of inequality and memory.
